“Covers, Tropes and Trust: Keys to Author Success” with Ally Machate and the Online for Authors Podcast

In the highly competitive modern book market, it isn’t enough to simply write a book! Ally joins host Teri Brown on the Online for Authors Podcast to discuss the keys to author success, imparting strategies for building a loyal fan base and establishing long-term brand equity. In this episode, Ally explains that the current publishing landscape requires authors to move beyond just writing and embrace marketing as a powerful tool: She emphasizes the importance of identifying a narrow target audience, understanding and utilizing genre-specific tropes, and building a direct line of communication with readers via an email list.

Ally and Teri also demystify the concept of “long-term brand equity” in the course of their conversation, defining the concept as the creation of a consistent and recognizable author brand across all assets, including book covers, websites, and social media, with the goal of fostering reader loyalty and recognition over time. Ally offers other actionable insights in her dialogue with Teri, including:

  • Targeting a Niche Audience: Ally argues that trying to appeal to “everyone” results in connecting with “no one.” She stresses that authors should identify a very specific, narrow target audience to market to effectively.
  • Three Steps to a Loyal Fan Base: She outlines a three-step process for building a fan base: 1) Be very clear about the book’s specific sub-genre, 2) Understand and deliver on the key tropes and reader expectations for that sub-genre, and 3) Create a “container,” primarily an email list with a reader magnet, to capture and nurture reader relationships directly.
  • Brand the Author, Not the Book: Ally advises that the author should be the brand, not a single book or series.  This ensures that the audience’s loyalty is to the author and can be carried across multiple projects.  Assets like website URLs should be the author’s name, not a book title.
  • Long-Term Brand Equity is Consistency: She defines long-term brand equity as the cumulative value of a consistent brand identity. This is achieved through cohesive visual and tonal elements across all assets, such as book covers, website design, social media content, and reader communications.
  • Managing Expectations is Crucial: Meeting reader expectations is key to success and avoiding bad reviews. This includes delivering on genre tropes, writing accurate marketing copy, and being clear about content levels, such as the degree of violence or sexual content (spice).

Ally is not just any book publishing expert; she’s a lifelong book enthusiast who understands the importance of audience—and the power of marketing—and she has helped many authors build their platforms and reach their literary goals.
